Vertigo by Jonathan Holloway

Made famous by the Alfred Hitchcock film, experience the stage play about a man trapped by his past and crippled by his fear of heights….

We joined Dr Jacques Ballard as he introduced the fascinating case of Roger Flavieres, a man who’s compelling story of obsession, murder, manipulation and deceit would have you on the edge of your seat.

Set against the turbulent backdrop of Paris in the 1940’s, Roger Flavieres, a retired police officer, is hired to follow the wife of an old friend. The mysterious Madeleine captivates his heart, but is the relationship what is seems or something far more sinister?

Oxfordshire Theatre Company, the county’s leading professional touring company, was pleased to present this psychological crime thriller of deception and intrigue, based on the original French novel, “D’Entre les Morts” by Boileau and Narcejac. With an exceptional cast including regular West End musical theatre actress, Sophia Thierens, as the leading lady, this was a performance not to be missed.

Music School Concert

Carterton Lions are delighted to be able to host the Witney Area Music School concerts at the Carterton Community Centre each year.

West Oxfordshire has certainly got talent and each June around eighty musical youngsters – ages ranging from 12 to 18 – perform a wide variety of pieces, ranging from classical, through “standards”, right up to date with rock and pop on the programme.    This is the culmination of a year of attendance each Saturday at the music school in Witney – run by the Oxfordshire County Council music service.  Here they are under professional guidance to improve and learn the joys of playing in a full orchestra or a small group or band.

The Community Centre is an ideal venue; good acoustics enhance the music.  A large stage allows maximum visibility for proud parents as well as the whole audience.   Excellent sound-proofing allows those not performing to relax or practice in the adjacent rooms.    The Lions are able to provide refreshments before the event as well as during the interval – and there is plenty of room to host a raffle and advertising for other events too.

Carterton Community “Growing together…” mural

Carterton Community “Growing together…” mural

The “Growing together…” mural was created by the imagination and creativity of the 2008-10 BTEC students at Carterton Community College. It was completed as a culmination of their two year BTEC course in their professional practice unit.

This huge mural was a collaborative outcome of their “Floral” project, in which they decided against one single design but instead they split the area into twenty four equal parts and each selected a culture to inspire their own section. It is certainly an impressive, colourful, inspirational piece, celebrating all of nature coming together.

The mural was officially opened by our Town Mayor Cllr Norman MacRae MBE on the 15th July 2010 as part of the year 11 End of Year GCSE & BTEC Exhibition, which was a real celebration of the talent and creativity our young people have and we wish each one every success in the future. The art students are predicted huge success in Art with 100% pass rate in BTEC Art & Design and 84% A-C at GCSE.

We applaud the amount of hard work and thought these young people have put into creating this local piece of Art for all the community to enjoy. It is situated in the café area of the Carterton Community Centre on Shilton Park.

A huge thank you goes to all the students for their hard work throughout the course, the parents for their support and also to the Carterton Lions and the local Co-operative for their generous donations to fund this large scale work. And especially a big thank you goes to Michael Lowe, Gill Carver, Bryan and Maxine Crossland for their appreciation and support of the talents of our young people in our community.
